Wind energy in GREECE

Wind power was due to expand by 352% by 2010 to meet the European target of 20% coverage of energy needs from renewable sources. Previously, there were 1,028 wind turbines installed throughout Greece and the number was set to reach 2,587 wind turbines before the end of 2010.

The wind power market on the contrary never stagnated and kept adding sustainable amounts of new capacity throughout all the years. A representative of Greece’s wind energy association said the group has welcomed the new law, but they also are seeking more clarity regarding the market mechanisms as soon as possible. The new law provides the policy framework but does not clarify significant market trading details. That oversight might scare wind investors who have not signed a PPA yet and await the new market regulations.

Five groups share about two-thirds of the installed power. They are EDF with 322.8 MW (17.3 percent), TERNA Energy with 277.4 MW (14.9 percent), Iberdrola Rokas with 250.7 MW (13.4 percent), Enel Green Power with 200.5 MW (10.8 percent) and Ellaktor with 162.9 MW (8.7 percent).
