Moricsala Nature Reserve was founded in 1912 and it is the oldest nature rezerve in Latvia. It is located in western part of Latvia on 2 islands in Lake Usma. Its territory is 818 ha.  It consists of boreal, mixed broad-leaf and oak old-growth forest as well as swamps. The reserve serves as a habitat for several species of moss, lichen and insects. One can find 222 species of butterflies there, for some of these butterflies the reserve is the only known habitat in the Baltic states.
